"Targeted Individuals" and Cyberstalking
We've recently been receiving a lot of questions from folks who are trying to use WiGLE to defend themselves against perceived electronic aggression of various types. We understand that there's a community who are misinterpreting elements of the application and site to suggest that it can position wireless signal sources without sufficient input, or track mobile wireless beacons.
WiGLE uses passive scanning, and online trilateration to estimate the positions of wireless beacons. This means we can say where something has been only based on the places in which you've seen it, and not in anything like "real time." WiGLE and our Android app are not suitable for self-protection of any kind - if you believe you are being harassed or are in danger, please contact the local authorities immediately and do not rely on the site or application when it comes to your safety.
