NASA World Wind
Hi all.
I was using Nasa's world wind software and was thinking how cool it would be if the wifi info from here was a layer. They have many layers like points of interest, the Lewis and Clarke Trail, Hill Forts of Norway and others. I am not sure if it is possible. But a data set for wifi spots would be sweet. Just a thought for someone ambitious. If you have not tried World Wind and don't know what I am talking about. You can download it from cnet or from nasa. I recomend giving it a look if you have not already.

I'll be writing a perl script to transform cache files into the XML format that WorldWind uses after school is done in May unless someone beats me to it. It's really quite easy. It could also be combind with a script to fly along tracks, which would be quite cool.
That is very cool. I was afraid when I made the suggestion that I would get a truck load of responces saying why it could not be done. Glad to see someone whith the know how has similar thinking.

Of course the ideal implementation would have WorldWind make queries straight to WiGLE through the general API over HTTP(S). However, WorldWind doesn't support this sort of functionality for non-terrain sources. I've put in a feature request, but it might help if others asked too. Get all your friends and go over to #worldwind on Freenode IRC and say, "we want WiGLE support".

Or fix it yourself if you know C#.lol I seriously doubt that a project of a government agency is going to support wigle specifically in any way. We all love it of course, and there's no question that wardriving is legal, but I think that wardriving makes the government nervous.
awe, i think nethugging makes the government all warm and fuzzy inside.
besides, wigle wouldn't be anywhere near as interesting without our tax-funded government-provided map data!

I'll give this idea a shot. I love C#, I love World Wind, and I love wardriving. I guess that's all there is to it!

Okay, an update: I've got it working. I just need to add a UI and then I'll unleash it to you guys.
Well here it is, the finished product (as of now). You can download APs from WiGLE.net and then save and load lists for local viewing while you wardrive (I reccomend the addition of the GPS plugin found here).
First of all, you need to have World Wind version 1.3.2. After downloading World Wind 1.3.1.1 here, you then need to get the files for 1.3.2 and extract them into the WorldWind directory.
Okay! Throw a folder called WiglePlugin in the Plugins directory and stick these three files in there. Then load up World Wind, go to the Plugins menu and look for the .cs file. Then load the baby up. The configuration form can be found under Plugns -> WiGLE.net configuration.
A few usage notes: Don't zoom out too far, or else the program will get majorly overloaded trying to display all the access points. You'll get a warning at 1000+ APs, but you can continue if you want. Be careful using it around urban areas as well. I reccomend using the APs along with the USGS Digital Ortho.
