Map Pack version questions

Is there any way to tell what version a previously downloaded map pack is?

How often do map packs get updated?

Right now the only way to tell is via the name of the downloaded zip file. I should really add that as a value in the .mappack file. Luckily the version hasn't changed in a while, it's been 2.0 for some time now. We're planning on a rather large change to the format, but that's a little ways off.
