Which GP S receiver to buy? Need help.

The gear needed for wardriving

Anyone know of a good gps receiver that works with NetStumber and MS Mappoint? I prefer to use pcmcia but I will use serial if necessary. I also noticed Navman had a SD gps receiver for the IPAQ but I don't know anyone that has tried it yet. Thanks.

I'm very happy with my garmin gps III, though it is serial. it has decent maps built in, gets satellite lock pretty quick, and works even through the city.

I'm also looking for a PCMCIA GPS solution. The Garmin III looks cool but I'd much rather just have the card and use software on my tablet for mapping. Does anyone have any recommendations for this? I found these listed on a site (some CF cards some PCMCIA): http://mightygps.com/pcmciacard.htm

Here's a site I found with some pretty low cost hardware:

But like the others on this thread, I'd like to hear from someone who has experience with some of this hardware.

They used to be $99 but you may want to check at a dealer

i've been very happy with my garmin rino 110, which i picked up for < $100 on sale. its not a /great/ gps (no map downloads, etc) but it has worked out pretty well.

try this one.

this is a full kit... all you need to add is the Ipaq, and its interface cable.

I have the Meridian which is the same as the Gold model, except it has 2 meg onboard ram instead of 16 and works VERY well.

Also.. this store is a nationwide truckstop which will be offering wireless all over their location soon (pay to use of course) but they advertise the pcmcia wireless Orinoco Gold card for sale (their brochures have it in there) so with the exception of the Ipaq or a laptop, they are selling everything else needed to wardrive

Mighty thoughtful of them eh? (and the breakfast buffet they have is decent)

if you get one, I HIGHLY recommend either a GPS antenna jack or a built-in external antenna.

I've been very happy with my Deluo USB GPS (http://www.deluo.com/Merchant2/merchant ... ry_Code=GR). I was able to get it brand new for about $70 on eBay, and it's served me quite well. Also, there is little need for a GPS antenna for the model (at least in my experience) because the GPS reciever has a pretty strong magnet attached to it, allowing you to just stick it on the top of your car as you drive.

I've got the Garmin eTrex. Cheapest one Garmin sells. Works flawlessly. Gets a satellite lock within 20 or 30 seconds. I put it on the dashboard in the front window, but the thing has had an excellent lock anywhere else in the car too. Batteries last a long long time. It's got a lot of nice features on the more technical side too. Such as showing you your signal strength for each satellite you're receiving, where the satellites are in the sky. For serial output too, it can emulate just about any GPS there is, so it'll work with just about anything. It does all your standard waypoints and stuff like that. Route tracking works great when you get lost in subdivisions. I snagged it at best buy for about $100 or so. Cheapest I could find. It doesn't have maps or anything though. If you want maps, expect to pay $300+. Also, to warn you ahead of time, I've got friends that have had bad experiences with pcmcia and CF gps units. Mainly because of the crapiness of the antenna, or non ability to move the gps where there can be better line of sight to the sky. So like Arkasha said, if you're going with pcmcia, get one where you can stick an antenna on it.

I bought a Sapphire USB GPS on an online auction site (after first beeing scammed at some online store  ). The Sapphire works really great and it's small. No trouble with high speeds, tunnels or bad sight. My unit did cost about $80 if I remember correct.

honestly, you've got a pretty good list there. some of them have displays and batteries, so you can use them seperately. some are usb natively, and won't require an adapter. i think i've met people who own or have used all of them. now it's just a matter of optimizing price, as they're all still a fair bit of $$... but with patience, you'll likely find a good deal on one or all of them.

Thanks but I'm really interested in the one that works best with Net Stumbler.

I don't think there's a "best" in this situation. they all work.
