You'll need to jailbreak your iPhone to do any kind of war driving on it.

Once jailbroken, WiFiFoFum from Aspecto Software and WiFiWhere from ThreeJacks are nice apps. The former is available via Cydia, the latter may (? - see http://threejacks.com/?q=node/173) show up at some point. My main app is WiFiFoFum.

There are several other scanning apps in Cydia, a few free, a few that cost a couple of bucks.

Nope, the one that originally were on the App Store all got pulled more than a year ago. Apple doesn't make the necessary API's available to developers to write a 'legitimate' stumbling app.
